Picking several orders during one warehouse journey can reduce travel time and accelerate dispatch. Yet batch picking in Odoo Enterprise only works when both grouping and sorting are controlled. For a company using Odoo in Belgium or France, the aim is to save time without turning an efficient picking run into a source of delivery errors.
Choose the right scope before enabling the feature
Batch picking suits frequently ordered products and orders that follow a similar pick path. One operator collects products for several orders, then the orders are sorted in an output or packing area. Start with a small product range and a defined time window; that is more useful than grouping every order that happens to be open.
In Odoo, batch picking is part of the Batch, Wave & Cluster Transfers feature set. It also requires Storage Locations and Multi-Step Routes. Before configuration, map the physical route: the picker’s starting point, locations to visit, sorting area, final check and hand-off to the carrier.
Set grouping rules that support the operation
A batch should not combine orders merely because they are available. Use rules the team can understand: the same operation type, compatible preparation dates, a shared picking zone, or a common carrier where the process warrants it. Odoo can create batches automatically from configured criteria; validate those rules with real orders before rolling them out.
Assign a responsible person where that makes workload visible, and retain a realistic scheduled date. The batch description can flag the drop zone, tote type or a handling constraint. It should complement operating rules, never replace them.
A short acceptance test that exposes sorting mistakes
Fictional Underside test case: three customer orders contain 18 items across six locations. They are combined into one batch so a picker can make one journey. The expected outcome is not merely “18 items picked”: each order must retain the right quantity, package and status.
- Pick the expected quantities and confirm the three orders are separated in the output area.
- Make one product unavailable: check the remaining quantity, expected communication and decision on a partial delivery.
- Pick an excess quantity: ensure the surplus cannot enter a customer package by mistake.
- Cancel an order already in the batch: check its removal and the destination of items already collected.
- Have another user process the batch: confirm access rights, information and accountability remain clear.
For every test, retain transfer references, planned and picked quantities, plus the resulting decision. Where the operation requires lots, serial numbers or delivery proof, include them in acceptance testing.
Measure the benefit without ignoring exceptions
Track distance or preparation time, but also sorting errors, remaining quantities and manual corrections. A very large batch can reduce travel while overwhelming the output area. The useful metric is reliable service: complete, correctly allocated orders prepared by the promised date.
For Belgian and French warehouses, align zone labels, signage and work instructions. A team that interprets “ready to ship” or “to be sorted” differently will create discrepancies that configuration alone cannot resolve. Our Odoo barcode guide helps make collection more reliable; the cross-docking guide covers the accelerated flow between receipt and dispatch.
