Odoo 19 product variants: sell without complicating the catalogue

In an Odoo business in Belgium or France, one offer can vary by colour, size, material or finish. With Odoo 19 Enterprise, product variants keep the product template readable while governing the references that are actually sold, stocked or manufactured.

Start with operational decisions

An attribute should not exist merely because it appears on a product page. Keep a variant when the choice changes the SKU, barcode, price, availability, image or bill of materials. A purely descriptive characteristic can often remain in the product description; this prevents unnecessary combinations.

For Odoo Belgium, Odoo France and Odoo Enterprise, assign a business owner to the attributes too. That person approves new values and maintains consistent naming across sales, purchasing, inventory, point of sale and eCommerce.

Configure attributes before references

Enable variants, then create attributes and their values before attaching them to templates. Attribute order determines their presentation in the product configurator, point of sale and online shop. The display type should help users: a colour suits a swatch, a short list suits buttons, and a long choice suits a selection.

Each relevant combination becomes a variant. Odoo can associate a barcode, a value price extra and separate stock with it. A variant's selling price is based on the template price, plus any attribute extras; pricelists can complement that logic.

Connect inventory, sales and manufacturing

The template gives a consolidated view, but quantities are calculated per variant. Ensure the warehouse team scans the correct reference and sales channels expose only combinations that are genuinely available. In manufacturing, one bill of materials can cover several variants: document component exceptions precisely instead of duplicating structures without a need.

Test the expensive cases

Fictional Underside scenario: in Namur, a manufacturer sells a panel in two formats and three finishes. Sales creates a quotation with a finish surcharge, the warehouse picks the right barcode, and the shop floor consumes the component specific to that finish. The test should cover the same combination in every channel, including a value removed from the catalogue.
