For an Odoo business in Belgium or France, a returned, unsaleable or refurbished finished product should not disappear through an inventory adjustment. In Odoo Enterprise, an unbuild order turns that product into components while retaining an operational record of the movement. It is a workflow to define precisely before rollout: recovering a part, recording scrap and returning an item to sale are three different decisions.
Set the reason before creating the movement
Unbuild orders are appropriate when an existing product must be dismantled to return components from its bill of materials. They can support a customer return, an uneconomic repair, an end-of-line operation or refurbishment. By contrast, a non-recoverable loss should be treated as scrap, and a simple location change does not require unbuilding the product. This qualification protects return, yield and quality metrics.
Prepare the bill of materials and identification
Odoo uses the bill of materials of the product to unbuild to propose the components to recover. Before allowing the flow, confirm that the bill of materials matches the physical version in circulation: reference, variant, unit of measure and components that can actually be recovered. For products tracked by lot or serial number, the team should select the affected unit and check its traceability before validation.
A bill of materials is not a diagnosis. Establish a simple rule to decide whether a component can be reused, must go to quality inspection or needs to be scrapped. Do not automatically return every recovered part to a location available for sale.
Secure locations and permissions
An unbuild order consumes the finished product, then creates component moves. Prepare explicit locations for parts awaiting inspection, recoverable parts and non-conforming parts. Warehouse teams can execute the work; quality or a designated owner can decide on return to stock. Also limit who can change a bill of materials and cancel a validated movement, so that the audit trail remains usable.
Connect the return, cost and recommissioning decision
The flow affects quantities and valuation. Production, logistics and finance should therefore agree how recovered components, quantity variances and valueless parts are handled. In an Odoo Belgium or Odoo France project, do not infer the accounting treatment from an inventory screen: verify it against the valuation configuration and company rules.
At a minimum, track products unbuilt, the rate of components returned to stock, scrapped parts, inspection lead time and differences between expected and actual components. These measures turn unbuild orders into an improvement process rather than a quiet correction.
Test a full return and its exceptions
Fictional Underside scenario: a customer returns an assembled kit. After diagnosis, the team creates an unbuild order, selects the kit lot, then sends one reusable part to quality inspection and another to scrap. It checks traceability, quantities, locations and valuation before allowing a return to stock.
- Test a standard product, a variant and an item tracked by serial number.
- Compare the components proposed by the bill of materials with those actually recovered.
- Verify destination locations and approval permissions.
- Test a non-conforming part, a missing part and a quantity different from the expected quantity.
- Review movements, traceability and the valuation view with finance.
- Document the decision to return to stock, repair or scrap.
