Odoo 19 packaging: receive and sell the right quantity

For an Odoo business in Belgium or France, buying by carton and selling by unit should not create unreliable stock. With Odoo 19 Enterprise, packaging describes the formats belonging to a product: a six-pack, a carton of 24, or a commercial pallet.

Separate packaging, units and packages

Packaging is a predefined quantity for one product; it is neither a generic unit of measure nor the physical package used for a shipment. This distinction prevents every carton from becoming a separate item. Keep the stock unit as the reference, create packaging formats that make commercial or supplier sense, then use packages for the actual packing of transfers.

Create governed product data

Enable Units of Measure & Packagings in Inventory. For every relevant product, give each packaging a clear name, a quantity, a reference unit and, when the flow warrants it, a barcode. Purchasing, sales and warehouse teams must share one convention: “carton 24” must never mean 20 units to a supplier and 24 in the warehouse.

For Odoo Belgium, Odoo France and Odoo Enterprise, appoint a product-data owner. They approve new formats, quantity changes and reference changes before those details reach shops, mobile terminals and connectors.

Connect purchasing, sales and receiving

Sales packaging makes a format easy to choose on a quotation while stock remains correctly counted in units. On the purchasing side, define vendor units in the same category as the stock unit: Odoo then converts quantities on purchase orders and receipts. A packaging barcode can speed up receiving by adding its quantity during a scan.

Test the end-to-end flow

Fictional Underside scenario: in Lille, a distributor receives cartons of 24 consumables, sells packs of 6, and sometimes picks individual units. The team must confirm that scanning the carton adds 24 units, that four packs of 6 exhaust stock with no rounding issue, and that a format change does not alter history.

• Create vendor and customer formats with their exact quantities.
• Test the purchase order, receipt, scan and conversion to stock.
• Test quotation, order, picking and invoice with every sold format.
• Check rounding, prices and residual quantities.
• Archive an old packaging format rather than rewriting its history.
